Making Better Footpaths

Chorley Borough’s Footpaths - Are Getting better and Better!

Chorley Ramblers has a responsibility to look after all the footpaths in the Chorley Borough.

The 23 parishes of Chorley Borough have 900 footpaths covering 300 miles. The mileage per parish varies between 6 and 20. Volunteer Parish Footpath Checkers check the condition of definitive footpaths throughout the Borough. Each volunteer is asked to check all the footpaths in his/her parish at least once per year.

We report blockages such as broken stiles, fencing across footpaths, poor drainage, and overgrown vegetation to the Lancashire Count Council, who take steps to clear the problems so that the paths are fit to walk again.

Our Footpath Co-ordinators, Marian Owen (North and West) and Kath Allman (Central and South) co-ordinate the reporting of issues identified by our Volunteer Parish Footpath Checkers to Lancashire County Council.

Adopt a Group of Paths Initiative
Following the launch of our “Adopt a Path Initiative” in 2009, we are delighted that 9 ramblers have volunteered to adopt a group of paths and work along side our Parish Footpath Checkers  in the role of walking and checking the condition and signage of footpaths.

We are keen to extend the number of our members involved in this initiative.

If you are interested in adopting a group of paths, or want to find out more, then please contact Kath or Marian.
